Sleep Patterns

Newborns babies spend most of their time sleeping and can sleep for up to 18 hours in a 24 hour period. Don’t worry through he won’t sleep for more than three or four hours, day or night. This does unfortunately mean that you can expect some sleepless nights, luckily it won’t last long even though it might feel like it when you’re sleep deprived. Those first few weeks can be exhausting and if you’re breastfeeding your baby may be feeding more often and on demand. Many mums who have been exclusively breastfeeding are tempted to give a bottle of expressed breastmilk at night in the belief baby will sleep longer, of course it’s useful for dad to help out and allow you to sleep longer; however bear in mind that your breasts will quickly adapt to this routine and start to produce less milk and it may take some time to build your supply back up again.
